How to Check if a Meme Coin Is Safe
Beginner Safety
Learn how to evaluate the safety of a Solana meme coin before investing, covering liquidity locks, mint authority checks, holder distribution analysis, and red flag identification.
Step 1: Run a RugCheck Scan
Visit rugcheck.xyz and paste the token's contract address. Review the overall risk score and each individual risk factor identified by the scanner.
Step 2: Check Mint Authority
Verify that the mint authority has been renounced or set to null. If the creator can still mint new tokens, they could inflate supply and crash the price.
Step 3: Verify Freeze Authority
Ensure the freeze authority is disabled. Active freeze authority means the creator could prevent you from selling your tokens.
Step 4: Analyze Liquidity Lock
Check if liquidity pool tokens are locked in a timelock contract. Unlocked LP means the creator could remove liquidity at any time, causing a rug pull.
Step 5: Review Holder Distribution
Use Solscan or Birdeye to view the top holders. If a few wallets hold more than 10% each (excluding LP and burn addresses), the token is at risk of whale dumps.
Step 6: Check Trading History
Look at the trading history for suspicious patterns like buy-only activity, wash trading, or coordinated buys from related wallets.
